My Travels 2018

By the end of year 2017, I set a goal of personal growth which included travel. I set a travel goal of at least 75 days in the year 2018.
And end of 2018, yes, I have achieved it ! and best of all I could travel to many places which i haven't done before. The following are the places I visited in 2018
1. Isha temple, Coimbatore - Jan
2. Wayanad - Jan
3. Mysore - Jan
4. Various parts of Kerala - Trivandrum , Kollam, Kayankulam, Alappey, Thrissur, Palaghat, Kannur, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta , Calicut , Kottayam , Wayanad etc - February through December
5. Poovar Island, Trivandrum - March
6. Delhi - March
7. Kulu , Manali - March
8. Simla - March
9. Parts of Punjab Haryana (Chandigarh)
10. Kovalam , Trivandrum - April
11. Tuticorin - May
12. Dubai - September
13. Geneva , Switzerland - October
14. Pune - December
15. Coimbatore - December
Though I didnt keep an exact days list, I think I have easily traveled around 75 days this year. Most of these trips were solo trips and some with friends / family. My first solo trip started in Jan to Wayanad and I did feel a bit nervous. But by the end of the year I traveled to different part of the world alone! I think confidence comes out of moving out of comfort zone. Today i am confident of travelling to any part of the world at any time!
I experienced new things in life which I couldnt have done if I hadnt been traveling! I did adventures like ziplines , played with snow , took Sauna bath, jumped into swimming pool, walked through streets at midnight , ate dishes whose names were weird and above all, I met some amazing people during all these trips. People who inspired me , people who helped me think, learn something new . Each of these travel experiences gave me new friends, new relationships and new perspectives . I am sure these will enable me to think and form new ideas to make some change in the world !
And the best part of these travels (except for family vacation - Kulu Manali) , most of them were sponsored or were undertaken as part of my business. As a friend of mine quoted, "As long as you don't see the bills, travels are great!"
Next year I wish to travel more !  Setting a goal for 100 days travel. Let's see!

Love Stories

"I don't love you", said the man
"I love challenges", said the woman.

And there began the greatest  love story  !

#CeeVee #Poem  #one lazy afternoon

Oh my Love!
Did I just dream that you dreamt of me?
And in those dreams , did you just write a poem for me?
The unwritten poem, the unsaid love makes me dream more
How sweet they are , fulfilled ever or not!

#CeeVee #Poem #love

Feelings are sometimes unexplainable.  Especially when you miss someone dear. Tears swelling in the eyes are just one symptom while there could be thousands happening inside.

Like the swollen clouds that wait for the dust to start  crying and then await the sun to wipe it away..
My eyes just swell with tears on your thoughts and now awaits to see you wipe it way.
Is this what we call, "missing you"?
🌦❣

#CeeVee 30/12/2018

Unrequited  love is an insult to self worth.
Yet, its all about nature.
To deny is yours,  To give is mine.

Life is all but enjoying this sweetness amidst its bitterness.
Just like savouring that little  piece of dark chocolate
or sipping that unsweetened cup of black coffee.

The January morning Sun 🌞

The cold january mornings
The chill in the air,  the nose that shivers
The dewladen flower buds
The half chirppy birds
Awaits the warmness of the hidden Sun
or the Lover's breath.  ❤

Lover's Mind

"Do you think of me when I think of you?", asked a lover's mind.

"Yes", replied the lonely lover's mind to itself.

Like the moon over the horizon awaiting the dawn, the lover's mind awaits the other.

Just to realise that a lover's mind is an Ocean that begins where it ends!

Dear Men, Did your wife fall or rise after marrying you?

Whenever I speak about women issues and ensuring gender equality at workplace or at society , I receive flak from men and sometimes women saying that I am being too irrational  or emotional . Some men say that I am being cynical for no reason . Some say, "Women has to show their capability and get their due respect and not use feminism for getting privileges" . Some men say, "We are pro-women always . Its just that women do not take up leadership roles. " Some men say , "I have empowered my wife but she is unwilling to go to work."  And the best part of all - Some men ask ," How does your husband tolerate you?"

Well, the list of excuses is long. One thing is sure - Capable women in our country are still in the kitchen deciding which masala to be added in the biriyani and which notebook brand is better for the kids while their husbands are enjoying the luxury of getting ironed shirts ready for their next travel.

Whenever I write about these things in an  open manner, I get men responding to me back . " We also want gender equality. I am also  a feminist. I do support women in whatever they want to do " .
Well, the man who says these dialogues in person or on the mike - Let's henceforth look at him closely - especially at his wife. Has his wife grown in her life as an individual after the marriage? Has his wife gained a name for herself in her field of career or business ? Has she got the empowerment to take her own decisions regarding the family and her career? Is she able to go out or travel on her own ?

So, my dear Men who say "I am a strong supporter of women" . Alright, I will agree . But my question and challenge to you is this : Has your wife risen up in her career / life after she married you? Has she fulfilled her dreams as a young girl or the goal that she set while she was in her college ?  Has she done further education after marrying you? Has she got enough financial and intellectual empowerment or is she dependent on you ?

If the answer to any of these is NO, my dear men , please start re-thinking when you hold that mike and speak in the public that "You are a believer in Gender Equality" .

A real feminist like me will only scorn at such men !

A real man empowers his wife and allows her to fly high. Sometimes higher than him . Just like mine. Though he is not a partner in my business, he is an equal partner in handling home affairs and kids matters and giving his wife the flexibility of managing her career. He also enables his kids to understand the priority and respect a mom's needs at workplace by volunteering where needed. So, you would often see my husband doing the dishes or cooking or attending the openhouse of kids when I am not around.

But yes, I should also say this :It had been a tough journey to reach this state of Equal partnership at home matters since he also was raised in a patriarchal society during his childhood and his expectations of his wife also was stereotypical initially. However, as some men asks me, "How does your husband tolerate you?" , I do accept the same with due respect and leave it to their imagination.

To men who say, women with capability can face any odds and win..Yes, My dreams and capabilities did take me to heights, but it does require balancing of home affairs for which the Husband and the kids needs to be empowered.

Dear men, you become a real man when your wife rises in her life. Go ahead and show it to the world ! All the best!

Self Transformation and what it can do for you !

My  transformation pictures: year 2007 and 2018.
Year 2017

The change from a housewife with no job and with too much of household responsibilities to someone who is now at center stage globally.

Yes, External change is evident. But what's more important is what happens inside, right!  And I think the past ten years that's more significant for me than these external changes like haircut,  make over or the weight reduction.
I have transformed into an independent woman who have her own perspectives about life and how to live..not just living on what society expects you to be. I placed education, continuous learning and my career over anything else. I also kept knowing more about myself..Experimenting with all my skills..fighting for my rights when denied.. And evolving into what I always wanted to be...The better version of myself every year. By doing this, I am providing better perspectives to my kids as well. And I guess I bring value to every conversation that I engage in.

And guess what : All this happened only when I started to love myself and placed my interests above all the chains. And it was not easy. It hurt many times. It gave me feelings of guilt, it gave me troubles, violence and rejections. It also meant that I lost my tag of a nice family girl ! I But I stood for my dreams. :)

And Guess what that did. Today I am at a coveted forum as the chosen one from India. I could have chosen the comfort zone or the cribbing zone. But  I chose the hardwork and persistence zone.

And  once you decide, Just go ahead !

Top 10 Reasons why women quit career after having kids

Top 10 Reasons why women quit career after having kids : ( in no specific order)

1. No Maid at home ( leading to twice the work with nil/ nominal support from others, which is physically draining )

2. Sick in-laws /parents at home ( due to lack of quality healthcare facilities and societal expectations of a "caring daughter /daughter in law". I remember a lady telling me that her mother in law lets her daughter to go for work and creates trouble when it comes to daughter  in law! She wants her daughter in law to take care of her including heating water for bathing )

3. Don't get alternate  quality childcare facilities at affordable prices. ( Most pvt run child care centers charge exhorbitant fees )

4.  Husband doesn't/ can't take leave when child is sick  ( oh well, his work is very important !)

5. Safety concerns of the caretaker  ( newspapers reporting sexual abuse by caretakers )

6. Non-flexible work nature ( employers don't have a system by which they can allow such women to work from home incase needed)

7. Guilt feeling ( "Oh, look at her.. She is too selfish. She doesn't care for her child / in laws/ parents ".... "Isn't it my responsibility to take care of my child? " )

8. Lack of Skills /confidence  ( qualification may be big.But are our educational institutions providing the right skills? )

9. Low pay ( which becomes a mockery among family  members and leads to saying, " You don't have to work for this small pay." This is a viscious cycle because, this leads to a bigger career break and they end up quitting career)

10. Cooking and household chores for managing a Palatial house.  ( A big house,  immense materials, fear of theft by maid,  lavish cooking style etc)

The Beauty Lover in me

The heard voices or the unsung melodies ?

The cry of a new born or the  unborn in the womb ?
The ingenious art that is exhibited or the artist's mind ?
The words  expressed or the unspoken conversations with loved one ?
The visible charm of a damsel or her hidden curves ?
The noisy mettle of a warrior or the deep valor in a lad ?
The awestruck lover in me always chose the unspoken and the unheard ...
For they give me the intoxication called Love !

The Fear of Unknown

The Fear of Unknown..

Rains, winds, and storms  in my mind..
clouded by vulnerability and fears
Is it just Monday blues?
or is it a sign of a looming  danger ?
The woman in me shivers for no reason
As if a leaf dwindling hard to detach from its twig and just fly away.
Knowing that the flight could mean death.
As if the waning moon just fighting for its vigour
Knowing that it doesn't have illumination of its own

The woman in me shivers for no reason
Knowing that with every breath we are nearing death.

Is it a longing ? Is it despair?  Is it pessimism   ?
All I know is that, the woman in me shivers for no reason.
And that reason has no life in the sea of emotions .

Onam and My Prayaana !

Every Onam, Interesting things happen in my life !  I recollect past four years of my entrepreneurship journey and what happened during Onam.

Year 2014 Onam  was when I failed in my partnership business with a friend and was asked to move out of office. That year was the toughest of my business  venture where quitting was the better option. But I chose not to quit. Continued 4Tune from my home office, Veena was there to support as the only team member! All the rest left !.

Year 2015 Onam was when I was depressed at home after I  failed in trying to launch a finishing school for engineers (Peaks Academy) and was once again asked to move out of an office of a partner. Then as a one last attempt tried to organise a Trainers Conference, which restarted my business. Later that year, I then conceptualised T4Trainer.com and started working towards building the startup and forming the team. Year 2016, launched it and got the support of NASSCOM 10K. Things started to move faster and better!

Year 2016  Onam , we launched Trainopedia magazine,  an exclusive learning & development magazine. I had a decent team size of 8 people at that time. And we worked greatly as a team.

Through out this journey, I realised the challenges of being a woman in a tech startup. I tried to help a handful of girls in building their career (some of them are now well - placed in other companies) . I realised that most of the time, women only need a minor push to help them build great things.I also realised that women need a safe place to work or startup and an ecosystem that helps them scale their business without huge investments.

Around 18 months back , Me and Keziah Thomas worked on a CSR project at a rural college and helped a batch of girl students get placed in various companies in our network. Then came the dream of setting up a finishing school for girls, which was dormant for sometime due to lack of funds and facilities.

Meanwhile. we again were out of office in April 2017, since incubation period  at Nasscom expired. With no place to go and when all the team members left , only two members stayed strong and continued with the company despite their several tempting offers and predicaments.

And Year 2017 ONAM, I announced the launch of Prayaana, one of a kind, employability, entrepreneurship and innovation lab for Girls and women, with the support of UST Global , Infinity Labs.

Year 2018 ONAM , I am proud to say that Prayaana has scaled decent heights, marked a few milestones touched the lives of over 10000 girls within the past one year of launch.  This Onam I wanted to launch an innovative online platform but it got delayed due to the floods and the related troubles for the team. But yes, instead we launched a new initiative Koottarivu , which is a social support project where senior students and women adopt schools which are flood stricken and volunteer as a teacher.

Every Onam, I do get significant things happening in my life - sometimes challenges sometimes happiness . Whatever happens , I think it was all part of growth. Part of being alive!

I have allowed destiny to carry me along and I am keen to await what it will bring me next Onam !

Grateful to all who have supported me in this journey (and also who left the journey ! ;)  )

Koottarivu stands for Shared Knowledge and Friendly learning. I envisage a future educational revolution with this initiative. Let's see what destiny takes me to.

The Love Teacher

I remember a recent conversation with my son.   As soon as he came home from school, he took his tablet and started searching for something. In a few minutes, I saw him making a sigh along with a "yes, so I was right". Perplexed, I asked what was the matter. He said, "Aah, my dumb teacher! " . I was shocked and reprimanded him for saying such words against his teacher.  He apologized and said, "Amma, but she is wrong" . I then asked the details and found that the teacher had given a wrong answer for one of his query in physics. Well, my son is a little ahead of his classmates in terms of his knowledge in electronics and physics. Probably that's why he got upset on the fact that  he got wrong information from his teacher. Am sure, he will then start to distrust his teacher the next time onwards. And in some cases, students like him will end up as casual listeners because they know that their teacher is not knowledgeable.

Another instance was when my daughter mentioned casually that she was doing an assignment for the sake of showing it to her teacher who will otherwise crib.

I know, most of you will have many such instances of student's perspectives of a teacher. As I grew up , I also did have several such teachers whom I hated . And ironically we start to hate a subject when we don't like the teacher  who teaches the subject. I still remember , one reason why I failed in Maths during my pre-degree(plus two) was because  I didn't like the teacher who taught it. I found all her classes boring to the core that I stopped learning and finally flunked in the exam. Later I took help of my own classmates who taught me the principles and then passed the exam.

Today being Teacher's day, I pondered over  who is a  great teacher? Or what is the future of teaching?  Ten years back this question would yield a different answer and today it leads to different one.

Oh, well at  a philosophical level, every human being or circumstances or experience is a teacher . And a greater teacher is someone who identifies and facilitates the teacher in every student he/she encounters. To put it simpler , a great teacher instills the passion in a student and helps him/her become a greater teacher than before.

But coming to the practical aspects, a  person who has taken up teaching as a career is expected to provide certain levels of experiences to the student .  And that experience includes Love .  Love that must be expressed by understanding the needs of the student and trying genuinely to help.

The role of a teacher thus is not helping the student learn the subject but to help him/ her fall in love with the subject. For which , the student should fall in love with the teacher ! Yes, every student should love his /her teacher first in order to love the subject.  I  may sound a bit off-track , but think deeper. you will get to know what I am trying to say. Ultimately we remember only the teacher who loved us and who cared for us specially than others.

With Google being the teacher of the new generation, I think , there is only one subject every human  teacher needs to teach - Humanity.  Whichever is the subject a teacher teaches, include the ingredients of love and humanity , I  am sure , the student will be transformed.

Yes, become "The Love Teacher" than  the mere "The Maths Teacher" or "Science Teacher"

Cheers

What this Flood gave us and what we ought to give back- an entrepreneur’s perspective on rebuilding Kerala

On the 72nd Independence Day of India, Kerala woke up to another form of independence. A human face of freedom struggle. Freedom from ego, freedom from unwanted biases, freedom from religious, political differences. The entire state put their best efforts to rescue and save millions of lives who got stranded in various flood ridden places.  Humanity prevails and we saw it in the smallest of kind acts around.
The Youth whom we so far called “reckless” , went ahead and took charge of working at the rescue and rehabilitation shelters, the fishermen who came along with their boats and saved innumerable lives from the water logged areas, the businessmen who gave away rehabilitation materials for free, the large number of volunteers who came forward as rescue soldiers, the army, navy and local area leaders who took up saving and serving the disaster victims – all are great examples of leadership.
A significant contribution of a crisis is resilience – the survivors develop confidence about self and also become grateful about whatever they have.  I would call this an opportunity which we should utilize towards building the state.

Being an  entrepreneur – my mind is probably tuned to look at various opportunities amidst all the adversities . I now take the liberty of thinking like an entrepreneur whose entire business is lost in a disaster and the challenge of starting from scratch .

The strengths  and weaknesses  , the priority and the implementation plan – all needs to be looked at.

Weakness – We lack funds.  We are in a bad shape . Economy, infrastructure and everything is devastated. We have to start from scratch at many places.
Strengths – We have a huge reservoir of skilled people inside the state as well as people outside who are willing to help.  And the best part is that this people are now united beyond caste or creed. Humanity is what binds them and they have a great zeal to rebuild.
Opportunities – We now have an opportunity – to rebuild our lost infrastructure to excellence as well as to channelize the youth energy towards betterment of the state.
Threats – Without proper planning, implementation and transparency, we will lose out totally. Our economy will get shattered, our people will get into depression, our infrastructure will get lost and our growth get delayed. We also face threat of medical and psychological catastrophes if we don’t channelize the positive vibes. And yes, dont forget the threats like communal disharmony and outsiders foul plays , terrorism.

So, what are the possible strategic measures , our state could do ?

1.       Channelise the youth energy – the people who joined together  forgetting all differences , religious, political ideologies towards rebuilding Kerala . Provide them the necessary funds, guidance, freedom and expertise for the same. Facilitate the youngsters to build startups which could help in rehabilitation and rebuilding works.
2.       Make a plan of action by including the bottom of the pyramid . Just like the fishermen who came up to rescue, we have immense talents and expertise at the bottom of the pyramid who are still unutilised
3.       Make a priority list and take up only the  high priority ones to be done by government machinery and outsource all the rest.
4.       Manage funds effectively and ensure transparency and accountability. Collect funds from all possible sources and invest in things that bring results and outcomes first and then only work on  second level priorities.  Let the prioritization happen at local level planning than at the central.

How to implement the above?
1
In 1997, Kerala did something which was a path breaker – The decentralisation of governance. Instead of the top-down approach to planning, the bottom –up planning method was implemented in the state. One of the significant methods of this was the conduct of Gramasabhas – where people in the locality got together , identified what are their needs and then made a project plan. Thus the funds were disbursed based on the project , the timeline and the necessity. I suggest a similar model for rebuilding Kerala . An "Action 365 days"  project which will help in re-building the state's needs within the next one year.
  • .       Every local panchayat / municipality can form a special flood rehabilitation committee which comprises of experts from all sectors – education , engineering , health , sanitation , social welfare, women and children, agriculture, logistics etc. Most important, there shall be atleast two local entrepreneurs.  It should be mandatory that local area experts as well as youngsters  be involved in this act. - deadline - 15 days from now. - We call them "Flood Action Startup"  . (For heaven sake , let this not be formed based on political ideologies but purely based on expertise)

  • .       This committee which will act like a startup  - a local area startup shall sit together and find out all the necessities and come up with an action plan along with a deadline. - one month time
  •      The Startup shall make a pitching to Government for their needs and also explain the implementation plan. Note: The implementation plan shall be made based on a priority list and execution capability list. For eg: A national highway damage needs state / center intervention where as a demolished wall of a school can be taken care by the local startup.
  •     This startup shall be assisted with necessary funds as well as available central resources and technology support.
  •      Each local startup CEO shall be given a online portal to update their requirements and also update the fund utilization pattern. The fund could be from various sources – Govt, NGOs, private parties etc. Each local startup could also be given a target to pool in funds from various sources and not to rely fully on Govt funds. Self-sustainable projects is what is needed.
  •      Appreciate and award the local panchayat FloodAction startups who perform and complete the plan within this 365 days action deadline.
Other points to be noted .
  •        Look for every opportunity to build enterprises which will enable generation of funds.  Every devastated land or property shall be looked at as opportunity first and look at options for starting up something out of the existing rather than spending money on expenses.
  • .       Look at BOT model for physical infrastructure than utilising entire funds from Govt in capital infrastructure
  • .       Have proper transparent distribution of funds based on requirement and also have social audit mechanisms
  • .       Make one hour of extra voluntary work mandatory for every Govt officials until we get back to shape (which I think will take one year )
  • .       Students and NGOs who are willing to take up roles can be channelized properly based on needs. Let students spend a portion of their day to work on rebuilding projects. This will enable not just in rebuilding but also building skills of the students.
  • .       Provide leadership and autonomy wherever possible.  Autonomy and elimination of bureaucracy is also critical
  • .   Eliminate corruption and publish financials regularly. Every penny must be spent wisely
Whatever I have listed above may sound small for some people. But looking at the kind of devastation as well as the kind of funds that will flow to the state, I think what we need is a proper implementation mechanism involving people. People are the greatest power and we have shown it now. What we need now is to channelize the people power to re-build the state. And this needs entrepreneurial drive and not mere political or ad ministerial efforts.

Let’s re-build Kerala - the entrepreneur's way.  I am sure , it will be faster, effective and cheaper.

P.S: The above is just an outline. Will need lot of  deliberations .

Independence Day of a Girl

      #Longpost #Feminism #Entrepreneurship #WomeninCareer

Last week , I was destined to meet some of the brightest girls from different parts of Kerala as part of our unique leadership camp of Prayaana. It was indeed an exhilarating experience for me. Two days of intellectually fulfilling discussions enamoured with the beauty of young ladies of substance.

As facilitator, I posed some questions for them to think and express their viewpoints. Questions like “What are the challenges faced by girls from Family?” , “What are the challenges faced by girls from society ? “ , “what are the challenges faced by girls from campuses?” etc.

Girls came up with all possible answers- the ones we see in most feminist literature. Reasons like “Parents do not allow their girl to go out of the city but allow their son”, “campuses discriminate leadership by allowing the top position for boy and girls being given only the second in command role”, “society impedes a girl’s freedom by putting restrictions on her based on many things like culture, religion, safety ,wage inequality etc” . . But what struck me most was the fact that most of the answers were presented along with personal examples .

Today is 72nd Independence day of India , and this led me thinking : “Are women in India truly free? “

Are women world over free? Before that - When is a girl independent? What is independence of a girl?
  • A girl is truly independent when she is able to take decisions and responsibility of her decisions
  • A girl is truly independent when she is not judged by others for her actions
  • A girl is truly independent when she finds her purpose of life and realises her potentials
  • A girl is truly independent when she is able to travel anywhere as she wishes to
  • A girl is truly independent when she has a financially secure future – when she has equal say over her ancestral property
  • A girl is truly independent when she is able to express her viewpoints without being criticised or ridiculed
  • A girl is truly independent when she is given freedom from stereotypical roles and is allowed to pursue roles beyond
  • A girl is truly independent when her parents/ dear ones do not have the fear about her safety
We can add more and more statements to this list.

I know the above statements are not distant dreams or impossible ones. Let us give our girls their freedom . Let us provide them a safe environment and help them achieve their dreams.

On this 15th of August, all I could do, as an entrepreneur is to try to do a small step towards helping fellow women and girls in overcoming the barriers they face in building their career. I firmly believe that all empowerment of a woman begins at her economic empowerment which begins with a solid career. Whenever a woman faces challenges in setting up her career, we as a society is losing out on the creativity and potentials of 50% of her population. There are many women who believe that its their choice to be on a sabbatical or stay away from career. However, I think , it should be purely their choice and not because of expectations or norms set by people around or society. Moreover, a qualified woman being idle is definitely a social injustice.

Launching the MVP portal of Prayaana – The portal where girls and women can create and maintain their profile with an objective of getting career advice, get assessed, certified as well as get exclusive learning opportunities. Me and my team at  Prayaana have a vision to empower 1 million women through this portal in the coming years.  Wish us good luck! :)

Empowerment is Education. And when a girl gets educated and sets up her career properly, it’s a generation’s dream that gets fulfilled.

LETS CELEBRATE TRUE INDEPENDENCE DAY OF A WOMAN IN A FEW YEARS FROM NOW!
