Future of Learning & Education : 12 Points to consider.

Sometimes I ruminate the future of learning and education and I find some distinct possibilities in the near future. We are now entering a phase of learning disruptions and what mattered most in the past century may be totally out of concern in this era. The below is just a random order listing of my thoughts based on my readings!. Inviting others to add on to the list.
1. All entrance exams will become redundant. Why would we need entrance tests when multi skilled and individual talents become more important ! So, entrance tests could be replaced by aptitude assessments and interviews by specific universities to induct students matching their areas of research. (That sounds death bell for entrance training centers!)

2. Systematic methods of talent assessments right from school will help a person identify their varied interests and arrive at multiple career options rather than the common careers. Thus we will soon have multi-disciplinary / multi -talented students who turn into professionals who have multiple skillsets.

3. Most of the people will become micro -entrepreneurs who can provide multiple services based on their skillsets. Skills and talent become valuable than educational qualifications

4. Higher Educational qualifications may become ornaments and what matters will be ready to use skill based education . Most of these short term skill education will be conducted by similar experts / small training institutes than big universities. Infact the so called higher education degrees are due to "academic inflation" that has happened in the past few decades and its time to come out of the same.

5. Universities will become places of high cost and only prestigious courses which involve philosophical levels of learning will be dealt by them. Most of the routine programs will become online/ mobile. Professors will become real time practitioners than just mere preachers of theory.

6. Big Schools will become non existent when more and more parents start "micro schooling" for better outcomes. Micro schools are small neighbourhood schools led by one / two facilitators where each child gets individual attention. The Big schools could then become hubs of education where these micro school children visit once a week to utilise the facilities .Same with home schooling.

7. Education will become more and more cost effective by utilising technology like AR , VR , AI , gamification and thereby giving the student the choice of learning from the BEST of faculty anywhere in the world rather than just limiting to what the teacher in his/ her classroom says or knows.

8. Blockchain technology could enable content protection helping educators make money by producing high quality educational content which become piracy protected. Blockchain could also help in sorting student data like certificates to be verified easily and thus reduce all fake certificates / institutions .

9. We are now entering a "Knowledge economy" and how much money one can make depends on how much one can learn and what different subjects one can master. The more diverse knowledge, the more valuable he / she becomes . So, the onus of learning and upgradation will be on the individual unlike the earlier decade where it was the responsibility of the organisation to train the employees.

10. Learning / Mastering a subject could have two components : Process knowledge and Content knowledge. Most of the critical learning of future will be process knowledge . Content knowledge could be gained by implanting a chip into our brain / or by using gadgets which could reproduce such knowledge on click of a button. For eg: Most of the lawyers rely on previous judgements and laws for which they take time to identify the right one. This content could easily be searchable on a click of a button. Where as the lawyer only needs to be present at the court to look at behavioural cues and also follow the procedure of a legal method. Thus, a lawyer will need skills in presentation, knowledge of psychology and legal processes rather than the exact codes . thus, future of learning is developing competencies to handle these requirements rather than rote memorizing of content.

11.Learning could become unstructured and people will engage in deep immersive discussions rather than a curriculum based learning. All routine learning will be converted to online education and what remains will be experience sharing and deep conversations with peer learners / experts in the field. Hence , we may not have teachers / educators /trainers any more. Only learning facilitators who can curate the right content for the learner and yes, provide personalised coaching whenever needed.

12.Most of the educational institutions will become enterprise hubs where students can practice what they learn. Engineering colleges will run engineering companies and MBA colleges run real businesses , journalism colleges will run real magazine. Those courses without real-time working facilities and experiential learning will eventually die off ! This simply means that either educational institutions start enterprises or enterprises start educational institutions . Stand alone system may not work !
As I said in the beginning, the field of learning is undergoing rapid disruption and we are moving much faster than we imagined. All we can wish for is that "All is Well"

Education & Entrepreneurship

There is a marked difference between someone who thinks of making some quick bucks out of investing in a business and someone who puts his /her breath into an idea or concept . We call the later as an Entrepreneur.
Especially in education business , it becomes a deterrent when such a greedy investor/partner comes in . Education is a slow business and we need enough patience and willpower to handle the ups and downs. I remember a conversation with an uneducated but rich business man who wanted to invest in setting up an educational institution because he thought it will break even in the first year itself. He even told me that we can take donations from the parents and invest that for the infrastructure . I also hear of other investment stories where the edupreneur have left the business coz of investor issues. And also stories of entrepreneurs / founders being evicted because of over expectations of investors.
Entrepreneurship is a tough journey and along with determination we also need strong ethical values and a sense of purpose.

People love to do business with people who love to do business!
Love your work

Inspiration in a train !

With due respect to all motivational trainers/ speakers, let me put this straight : internal motivation is the best and all what an external motivator could do is to trigger internal motivation. And to trigger internal motivation, there is no magic formula. Sometimes an inspiring story helps, sometimes an incident or sometimes an emotional situation. Most often, i find that real examples of inspiration helps rather than narration by a third party.

And it also depends on the age and stage of the audience. However, without understanding the nature and requirement of the audience many times, some of the motivational trainers or speakers go to the extent of self mockery by narrating forward stories in whatsapp !
For me, I have reached a stage of my life where a person who has done something incredible beyond his/her limitations only can create a surge of heartbeat and conviction to do something beyond what I am doing now!
For eg: I met a 60 plus man in my recent train journey who sold organic seed packets. He started his sales by giving a short speech on the bad effects of pesticides, cancer causing vegetables and finally how anyone can make a small garden at his home and take care of his health . Most of the seeds got sold. After sometime he sat near to my seat. I asked him "Sir, do you sell seeds everyday in train?"
He laughed and said," No, I don't have time for that. I have a farm to take care. I have other business as well. " His appearance was shabby but his words were eloquent. He continued, "I come to train once in a month to sell this for two reasons : 1. I can talk to a captured audience about the ill effects of pesticides.2. My seeds get distributed to various parts of Kerala since people who buy travel to various places.
I became more curious and we further spoke for sometime. Everything he spoke made me feel smaller and smaller. As he left the train in the next station, he instilled a tonne of motivation in me to do more than what I am doing now! ( Sorry, I couldnt click a pic. I forgot even looking into my phone for the 15-20minutes he was talking )
Inspiration exists around. Just that we need to have the eyes to see it :)

Being a Woman and an Entrepreneur !

"The Woman's way to Entrepreneurship." This was the topic for my talk at the K2K business meet organised by Positive commune Entrepreneurship club and Vijayeebhava Alumni at Kannur.
As with any women entrepreneur program, I expected more women audience. But to my surprise, the audience was 95 percent men. I feared that I would be judged as a "feminist" and my talk as yet another feminist propaganda. I started with entrepreneur qualities and then about societal gender stereotyping and then about the challenges women face being in business or to enter workforce.

I was immensely glad to talk to a group of men instead of an all women group. I was very candid about men's behavior towards women in worklife and about the role of family support and the role of husband /father.
Outcome: after the event, around 6 or 7 men came and told me : I will encourage my wife to enter profession or business. 3 or 4 women who attended also came and told me thanks for inspiring and they wish to restart their career. One guy was upset that his wife didnt attend the pgm. He asked if i can talk to his wife. He is pushing his wife to join his business and she is not accepting.
And yes , a few men also teased me saying that they won't introduce me to their wife because they fear i will "spoil" them by making them think independently . For them, wife entering business will be spoiling the peace at home ! ;)

March 8th - being Women's day , there happens several such events. I spoke at 3 such events in this month. Well, i think in such events, the audience should be more men instead of women. I wish to talk about women entrepreneurship in forums where more men are there! That's where gender sensitivity begins.
As a free spirited woman, my expectations from people  around me and the society is as follows.
Firstly, As a woman, I expect that I am not being stereotyped as a woman but as a Human Being with independent ideas, talents and skillsets. If that's set, next goes my expectations as a human.
As a human, I expect I am addressed as an individual not in relation to a man . Most woman have the tag as a " mother", " wife" or "daughter", where as men have the tag of their profession or family name. Nobody tags them as "father", "husband" or "son" unless the woman is significant.
As a human professional, I don't want any one asking me " How do I balance my family and work life?" Will u ask the same question to a man ?
As a human, I expect that I am allowed my mobility to travel safely. And that i am not judged when I have to travel with another man for any purpose.
As a human , I expect that I have the freedom to pursue my passions, my career, my ideas and my wishes without limitations. A women's career decision is currently bound to the man's career and during marriage it is expected without question that the woman has to resign her job to join her husband and not viceversa(unless the woman is a nurse in UK)
As a human, I get to decide what to wear, how to wear , what to eat and where to eat.
As a human, I get to decide what to buy, how to buy and where to buy.
As a human, I get to decide how to study, what to study and where to study.
And same goes to sex.
As a human, I wish to get protected under law and religious norms and not being victimized if any violence in the form of emotional, physical and domestic violence occurs.
As a human, I wish my fellow human beings treat me with justice, honesty and care when I do the same. And as a human, I dont wish to be praised for all the sacrifices I made or appreciated for all the patience or endurance I have even when I am being treated unequally.
The only challenge is that when u replace the word human in the above list with "woman" , it becomes a difficult aspiration.
Personally, I think I am an empowered and liberated woman in many of the above statements but people like me are just less than 1 percent of the whole population. Lets make the cult to 50 percent in the coming decades! :)
As long as the above is not fully accomplished , women's day celebrations are a myth. Personally, I am not interested in branding myself as a "Woman Entrepreneur" because according to me ,
Being woman entrepreneur is getting monthly periods and traveling in Indian Railways to attend a meeting.
Being woman entrepreneur is having fun watching men who stare at you as if you were an alien.
Being woman entrepreneur is when you go for a meeting and the gentleman asks me "Didnt your boss come? " He was expecting a man who can take decisions .
Being woman entrepreneur is smiling subtly reading "Women's day Posters " from men and wondering if the guy will actually give the same empowerment to his wife , mother or sister !
Being woman entrepreneur is being vulnerable to flirtatious or sexist approaches from dumb men!
And Being woman entrepreneur is suddenly media glorifying you during the month of March!
Every human being have the right to live life their way . Let's give the same with <3 and not by observances or conducting events.  Let's celebrate Gender Equality day instead of Women's day or Men's day or Transgender day.
Men, Women, Transgenders : All have equal rights

Cheers!
