Mosquitoes, Budget, Harthal et al

I was thinking about what to write this month in my blog. So many things happening around and most of them are quite surprising.  Living in Kerala itself makes you think about your life with a different perspective and when you travel outside, you also realize the difference very well .

Last month I had been to Chennai, the capital city of Tamilnadu on official purposes. Ofcourse, the city is crowded, heavily populated and unclean than what Kochi is. And the one common factor between Kochi and Chennai is the omnipresent mosquitoes!  Infact , a few of them managed to keep me awake the whole night, despite the repellant and other methods of protection. That night I understood the difference between Chennai mosquitoes and Kochi mosquitoes ! – Want to know?

Chennai mosquitoes were fast, brisk and mostly small in size. They actually were too smart that before you target one and try to beat them, it flies off and becomes invisible.  But, back in Kochi, I always could easily trace and hit the flying ones because mostly they were bigger in size. And yes they moved slowly and usually takes rest on the walls after a short fly. Best of all , they even sing songs announcing their presence. In the end, get killed easily by me!  That night, I understood how people and mindset of Chennai and Kochi can be related to Mosquitoes.  Just like the lazy, big , singing mosquitoes in Kochi,  the lethargic , egoistic attitude of Malayalies  keeps howling unnecessarily around small things and end up facing death without any further growth.  Whereas the small, but brisk mosquitoes of Chennai, which flew away without getting caught and achieving its goals – getting its food!  You might be wondering,  Wow, what a philosophy !  ( Chennai mosquitoes here symbolically relate to all the developed states /nations )

Now, let me talk some facts.

Kerala is the first fully literate state in India, having highest human development index, high density of population, a decent Forex inflow, a pretty high number of educational institutions ,high number of hospitals, well connected infrastructure , lowering poverty ratio, increasing consumer price index and the list of best goes on.

But then, Kerala is also a state with increasing crime rates (especially sex crimes), increasing political and religious intolerance, increasing debts, increasing corruptions, increasing drug menace and alcoholism, increasing lifestyle disorders, cancer, increasing unemployability despite the increasing number of educational institutions etc.

Add on to it the recent issues related to the corruption charges related to the allocation of Bars by the Finance Minister and the related chaos during the Budget meeting and the way the social media and the youth took it over! I guess we already had more than two Harthals and other strike measures in the same issue. But, despite all this, there is no big change in the political system or governance of the state. Thanks to the literate Mallus who are online who are first to react to any incident, the positive point is that the general public seems to be well aware and are critically viewing the behavior of all what is happening around them. But, whatever, the fate of the state is that during elections all this is forgotten and we end up having to choose between one of the two - the left or the right!

When there are so many developmental issues ,which needs addressing as well as proper monitoring, unfortunately , we the bitter guard  shaped state of India, end up mostly redressing matters , which may be even senseless. We end up with bitter pills in every budget. Just like the lethargic big singing mosquitoes , we too move around at a slow pace and end up lost.  Add to it , the work hours and productivity lost due to recurrent harthals!  Its time to think different and faster to implement things for the future. Lets work beyond politics, social and religious limitations towards the progress of the state and there by to the progress of the nation.

Good Luck Gods’ Own Country!
