A Tribute to my Alma mater

My Almamater moulded me to become a manager for the mankind

I still remember the day I boarded the train to attend the GD & Interview session for admission at School of Management Studies, CUSAT.

But, before I get to that story, I should talk about how I had dreamt about that journey. It all started while I was doing my graduation in Trivandrum. I was an NCC cadet and used to be in camps most of the time. Though I was born and brought up in an ordinary middle class family in Trivandrum, where both my parents were Government employees, the NCC training gave me a lot of confidence and courage to aspire beyond the mediocre. Thinking beyond graduation and that too for an MBA degree was not something so pleasant for a member in our orthodox family, where the girls typically get married while they are in their college. It was during one of those camps that one of the officers inspired me to pursue higher studies and get into managerial roles than stopping my education at graduation. For the first time, I  heard about the degree called “MBA” and was fascinated towards it. I started asking all the people around about the same. In those days, when we cannot “google” details, the only option was asking to different people. I came to know that MBA degree was mostly given in premium institutes outside the state and in Kerala, not many institutions give that degree. I started enquiring about my dream PG “MBA”. Luckily, I got a wonderful neighbor, Ms.Bhawna Sharma, who was already pursuing her MBA degree at SMS. It was  she and her weekend stories about SMS,  that lead me to dream more about my education at SMS.

I started my preparation for  the admission test with borrowed textbooks. My parents were not much impressed about the fact that I was aspiring for a college admission outside the district. However, my constant efforts proved to be successful , when I cleared the admission test and was invited for the GD and interview at SMS. It was somewhat a havoc at home, when my father told that , “OK, Good that you have cleared the test. Now forget all that and let’s get admission for MSc in Trivandrum itself”. I pleaded and told that atleast let me attend the GD, Interview and even  if I get admission, I won’t go. Atlast ,with my mother’s support, I boarded the train alone to attend the GD and interview session. That was my first journey to Ernakulam.

The GD and interview went on well and I got admission too. But, at that time, I didn’t know that I was just one of the 50 students among thousands of applicants for the course. And my parents who were earlier reluctant to send me outside the district, got convinced and proud at the fact that their daughter got admission in one of the best campuses in the State. The vast and vibrant campus is infact a serene environment for academics and development. Now, after ten years, I will say with conviction that it was that journey which changed my life and perspective about career. Today, looking back at my own growth as a management professional, I feel so humbled and happy to dedicate the same to my Alma mater, SMS, CUSAT.

My education at SMS has given me a wide exposure to the world of management. The time spent in interacting with students from different parts of the country and getting practical exposure about different aspects of theory, has definitely helped in laying strong foundation. The best part of the educational experience was the academic inputs and interaction with the highly qualified and effective faculty there. All SMSians will  accept the fact that each of the faculty member is a repository of knowledge who when kindled by those with hunger for knowledge will find it an enlightening experience.  I still remember the various opportunities which came to us while I was a student, which helped in getting better industry exposure. Some of them were working on various market research projects, organizing international conferences, organizing campus based events, Talentime etc. Through these activities, we could develop our personality, gain experience and also give back to the society.

The best part of the education was that I got three campus offers and that too while I was in the third semester itself. I chose the best offer whereby I could render my services in the social sector with a bigger social impact. My first job, which was a Govt Project, was filled with big challenges and opportunities to serve the society and the most important requirement for that was initiative, leadership skills and communication skills. The various leadership activities at SMS, presentations , and seminars has helped me to do the same with ease.

My career then shifted to training roles and academic roles along with a pretty good exposure in business roles in some of the reputed corporate in the state. And the best part is that wherever I went , there would be somebody in the top management ,who has done their MBA from SMS. The word “SMS” helped in immediate bonding and camaraderie with such senior professionals, which further helped in my professional growth and development.

My attachment to SMS never ceased after education and I decided to pursue my doctoral program there itself. Despite having got admission in other institutions, I waited for one long year for gaining admission at SMS for my Phd. The urge to serve for the mankind has also led me to become an entrepreneur and I run a consulting company in the field of HR and Employability services today. I owe a lot to my alma mater and I will continue to serve in the best possible ways to her.

Management Education today is at crossroads with thousands of management graduates passing out without proper training or industry exposure. In one of my own research works conducted among 100 employers of fresh management graduates, most of them expressed  their concern in the deteriorating quality of the current generation of management graduates. One of the main viewpoints was that , the current generation of MBA graduates do not possess the necessary practical knowledge nor the willingness to learn. They also expressed concern over lack of quality in B-schools, especially the academic quality and the lack of exposure for the faculty.
Most of the current B-schools focus on the physical infrastructure and less on the intellectual infrastructure, which has lead to the overall deterioration in management education. And this is where, SMS, CUSAT, stands different. By providing holistic education and focus on intellectual infrastructure, year on year ,  MBA graduates with industrial knowledge and societal commitment pass out from this great institution.

As SMS CUSAT completes the Golden Jubilee year , this is a small tribute from one of her  wellwishers and proud Alumni for the years to come.

A Chottu story :)

Sometimes we can learn basic lessons of living with dignity from the so called "wagabonds".
Meet "chottu". His mother Arthi and her mother have come all the way from Rajasthan and got some shelter in Kochi. Instead of selling their bodies(which is what the society think they do) or robbing someone...they sell these handicrafts on roadside.
They have not done any business education nor any investment..other than their sales skills..which is derived from utter need for existence.
Average sales for a day crosses 2000 to 3000 rs and they start their work at 6am till 6pm. Home is where business is. Chottu helps his mom by not running too far away from this shop!
A woman with a need to survive for her kids is a highly creative resource of a nation.

Whims and Fancies of a Parent

As a career consultant I get to meet several types of students and parents on a daily basis. This particular incident is still fresh in my mind. Hence narrating the same .

Location: Education Expo, Marine Drive , Cochin.
Me and my team at our stall providing Career Guidance for students and parents.
Met a lovely looking family. Mom, dad, a 17 yr old shy guy and his younger sister.
I asked- "So, young man, tell me what do you want to do in life?" . He didnt speak anything. he smiled ,looking at his mother. I asked, "So, you want to be an Engineer ? Or doctor? " He shook his head and said, "No" and then looked at his mother again. She then told me , "Madam, he doesnt want Engg or Medicine. We are looking for other good courses. He is telling that he wants to go to NASA and we can't send him there. He is not clear about his ambition and we want to guide him. we will choose only the best, after studying the various options. but one thing, I cant let him fly away from us. Ours is a joint family and we cant afford to send him away from family as per his wish." I then looked at this boy and asked , "So, what's ur plan dear?" . "Maam, I want to do BSc Physics, then MSc Physics and then go to any research institute outside to pursue research in Astro physics. From there I can go to NASA. We dont have much good courses in Astro physics in India. so, I want to go abroad." At this stage, the mother interevened and told me, "Madam, he is a kid , he doesnt know about career. It is our responsibility to guide him right and not just go behind fantasies!!.. I am an advocate and a counselor and I know my son will listen to what we say. He cant leave us and our family and go behind his imaginations! I am at his back always... I am his mother and he cant leave me and fly! " The shy boy looked down and was not even smiling, by this time.
Though we tried to convince her that the boy's educational goal was excellent , the mother was not ready to listen and she hurriedly left the place. she would have thought that if she continued sitting with me, she will lose her boy!
My dear Mother- you are not standing behind your son, but in front of him and his dreams!
Feeling upset on the fate of that brilliant boy who has 92% in plus two and full marks in Physics. Poor boy will soon end up in some Engineering college of the state and will end up as one of those 1000s of clueless Engineers!! And feeling sad that we have lost a good scientist and probably an Astronaut.
(Incidentally, this guy was the first one whom I have met after so many years , who actually was so clear about his career goals. I was so excited to see such a brilliant young boy of 17yrs who is talking about the difference between astro physics and normal physics... )
I wonder when will Parents accept what their child loves and not what they want !!

May god bless him and his parents!

Today I met some IT guys in their 30s who had bald head, looked really tired and their eyes were almost swollen.. May be a few even have BP and other stress disorder! They wanted a new job badly, but they know only what they know..nothing beyond..! I wouldn't blame the MNC system oriented assembly unit kind of job, where each person do not know all about what he is making actually. I would blame the individual for not taking time for skill development.

The Solution- Get multiple skillsets. Invest on improving ur skill base while the sun shines !

She always enjoyed celebrating her Birthday and used to tell me that its a special day, coz everything that we are started with our birth. If it was some other day, we could have born different. And she is the one who told me that a woman's birthday should be celebrated equally. Over Thirty years back she started her tryst with the society for her rights and for empowerment. She used to drive an MUV to the amaze of all people in our vicinity and she had a short haircut and wore lipsticks to the amaze of my family and relatives. She used to walk faster with her head held high and told me to be so always. She told me to dream big and never to stop dreaming. 20 yrs back, she dreamt of visiting the U.S. and she achieved it by her own effort. Not just that, she spent all the earned money for taking her family for a visit abroad (even when others told her to save the money for her daughters' marriage)
Now I realise, how much she was ahead of her times and how much struggle she had to face!
You were too young to leave the world. But, before you left, you have shown a path for me to follow.
Happy Birthday Amma .."

How BOLD are you ?

Recently I saw many people in FB praising the film "how old are you" ,and the actress Manju Warrier. I too saw the movie and appreciate the fact that Women oriented movies are coming and can make an impact in the society's mindset of gender stereotyping. The movie has a strong message saying that when the woman decides to come out of her shell and try to prove the significance of her life, all her dreams are possible.

Her role Nirupama in this movie is a typical portrayal of a normal "housewife with a govt/private job" . Any malayali man would like to have that kind of a wife, who earns the salary as well as takes care of the family without disturbing him or his happiness much.

In this movie, Ms.Nirupama, feels dejected at a particular instance and later realises her potentials, started a venture. By god's grace in her first attempt , she proved that she can be successful. Thus, she got the respect of her husband and the rest of society. The movie ends with a happy ending...where in even the President of India invites her for a meeting within the first 2 years of her venture.

But, what would have happened, if she failed in the first attempt? What would have happened if her entire crops was a failure and she loses the entire 5 lakh loan?

How many Nirupamas can face such failures? What will the society tell about Nirupama, if she had failed ? Will the society give her the support? Will her own husband accept her? Most probably, Nirupama will end up becoming the same old "housewife with govt job" or in worst case, commit suicide (coz, women are emotional fools)

9 out of 10 ventures are bound to be failure in the first attempt. But, if only each of those 9 ventures continue to sustain with the support of family or society, we can see wonders around us!

The real support that a woman needs is in times of failures and not in times of success.

Hope , more Nirupamas arise in this Mallu society, where woman are viewed upon mostly as an object of lust and least as an individual with her own dreams!

Thanks Manju Warrier and awaiting a movie where a woman keeps on failing and striving until final success.

Are you highly qualified?

Hi friends,

I am just sharing a few examples of people whom I have met recently.

Eg 1 -A guy from a below average family background, poor schooling, not presentable ..couldn't get admission in a decent college (thank god! )

He did an animation course and learnt all software related to designing. Attended his first interview along with his portfolio of works done and got his first job with a high paying salary not even given to PGs. Now he handles entire online marketing of the company.

Eg 2 - A guy from a well- off family, international schooling, high- fi life, well groomed. Managed to get admission in a decent college, Did MBA. Got job in sales, didnt like it, threw it and went to some other profile.  Then jumped to HR and then to something else. Now hunting for a job.

Eg 3 - Last day I met this smart young man who is our client and on casual discussion, I found that he is just 26yrs and is handling pan- india business development for this Delhi based company. He travels pan -India and establishes business units in the cities. Within the past two years he has set up offices in over 10 locations and set up running the branch. He is an IIT chennai guy specialised in Ocean technology. But I was surprised at the way he talked business strategy, his selling skills and the way he was focused on his task and managed his own time!

Eg 4- A guy who has done his BTech from a decent Engg college in IT.  When asked whether he can design a simple website with 10 pages, prompt came the answer- "Maam, I don't know programming and all. I will learn and do it" . But you have mentioned in your resume that you know web designing.  OK, how much time you will need to learn? , "Maam, i dont know, may be three months". Me- So, until you learn , why should I pay you? You learn and come with your portfolio.. I will hire you.

Now, Y did I narrate this four examples?

Just to highlight the fact that , gone are the days when Educational qualifications mattered. Now is the time to really focus on SKILL Development

My dear students who are about to pass out- Please FOCUS on developing your SKILLSETS while in college, so that you become EMPLOYABLE immediately.

The Maleficent Course

Yday, I met a young girl who has completed her BTech from a rural college with over 90 percent mark and with an eagerness to pursue her career. She is from a rural village from a neighboring district and lacked confidence and English communication skills, due to her poor schooling. On enquiring further about what she is doing after Btech, she said that she has joined for a CCNA course (Cisco Certified Network Architect) in an IT training institute in Cochin. The course fee is Rs 20000. and she,who is coming from a very poor family background has somehow arranged loan from a wellwisher and has reached Cochin with a lot of aspirations. The training institute has withheld the truth that there are providing only the CCNA training and the certification will actually cost another 75K . This girl was under the imagination that she will soon become a CCNA and that all her family woes of an ailing father, mother and sisters will end, when she gets a job in two months time, whereas in real, she doesnt even have the money to survive in cochin and can't even imagine of arranging 75K for the exam fee!! Only a certified Network engineer can actually think of getting a high paying job and most others end up back to square one or taking up BPO jobs !

I felt really upset when i came to know that the training institute has actually cheated her by not providing the right career guidance! When asked, whether she actually enquired about the credibility of the course and the center, she said that the counselor told all their previous students have got job in MNCs.
The word MNC IT company lured this girl too ...coz she thought that her Engineering education with 90 percent did not get her job..may be this course will atleast help her! And the highlighting part is that she is no way connected to the field of hardware or network engineering before and her Btech was in Electronics and communication! And still she got convinced that this will bring a magical twist to her career!

But, her problem in my assessment is only ONE - Lack of English Language skills. If only she corrects that, she will easily get through any of the interviews..coz , she already has the confidence and the attitude to learn. Instead of giving solution to the core problem, unfortunately, people spend time, money and resource on something else and then end up frustrated!!!

Wish, each educational institution plays atleast some interest in the development of soft skills and communication skills in the students , rather than producing engineers like broiler chickens!

Wish ,the training centers provides the right guidance , instead of just trying to sell their courses on these poor victims who lack financial background ,exposure and are really perplexed about their career!

Wish students become a little more sensible in developing their skills by understanding their own weaknesses and the education system provides such opportunities.

Wish, every parent (especially the lower and middle sections) stop taking huge loan for their child's education unless they are sure about the child's area of interest, capability and possibility for placements by doing the course.

And Wish, our country provides the best quality education in the Schools where the foundation is laid properly!

-----------
N.B. This girl is now part of my office, quitting her useless course and saving atleast the remaining of the course fee installments. But how many can I save like this?

The Rich Brand

Most people buy high valued premium or luxury branded products, mainly for their Ego satisfaction and for a psychological need of association with rich community! Apart from this, I don’t find a deep difference in quality parameters of any premium branded product and a second level branded product of the same category.

In simple terms, if you buy a particular brand of shirt or mobile or computer or shoes, which are already owned by the rich, you get a feeling that you belong to that group.

You may even know some filthy rich man who keeps telling people that his shoes are worth 3000 dollars and his shirt is 700 dollars!
Now, listening to his narration, some “not so rich” guys too end up buying the same or at least something near to it, imagining that it will give them also the same prestige!

Well, is that what we can call as "Brand Value" ? or is it the "Money Value" giving that ? If so, my question is how much is the premium we pay for that?!

See the example of Apple iphone . Of course , it costs much above the ordinary smart phone and most people buy it ONLY for the prestige factor. I wonder ,how many of the iphone users are actually using its facilities fully!

And yes, it actually feels funny, when the "not so rich" carry an iphone with them and keep swiping the screen .. And i also feel funny when the filthy rich carry them..and asking somebody else to operate it !!

One funny incident happened recently. A friend of mine who was trying to sell some premium product narrated it. He used to meet rich men/women to market their product and used to carry a normal laptop. It seems, he was not even allowed to meet a particular rich lady , who is also an actor , when he went with his laptop. a few days later, he somehow managed to get a friend's Apple iPad and went to meet this same lady..and he could sell his product!! The product which was being sold is the same ...and the man who went to sell is the  same... the only difference was the ipad!! What does that mean??

YouthWords

I find that these days youngsters are using abusive words, cursing words and sexually offensive words in public places so easily without even understanding that they are spoiling their own image! The same tendency is followed even in Facebook also. Young boys of 18 and 20 yrs are using abusive words as if they can say anything and everything!

Worse experience- a close look at some of comments in FB or YouTube is enough for u to feel horrible the whole day!
Worst experience- , when u can identify some of the abusive language users and are shocked at their excellent vocabulary and rendering of sexual words!!

I dont know if my observation is biased, but I also feel that many of the worst comments r in malayalam!! Or it may be coz I dont understand what's written in other languages!

So, whats happening to our youth? Are the boys and girls having a misleading notion tat, only by using such words, they become an adult?

Where exactly is the problem? Is it education? Is it parenting? Is it peergroup? Is it the media? Is it the cultural deterioration?

CeeVee

Money and School

One of my observations about education spend by parents is as follows.

-Parents are reluctant to spend money for the school education, but save the entire wealth and money to give as donations in higher education to get a seat in MBBS or Engg.
Is it because of lack of dispoable funds from the limited salary during the early married life?
Or
Is it coz they want to wait and see the aptitude of the kid and then invest in their education?
Or
Is it just that they want to save the money for future education?

What do you think may be the reason?

Are u willing to pay a higher fees for your child's school education or extracurricular education?

I think, if the foundation is laid well, even for a higher cost, it can probably reduce the need for donations or capitation fees in higher education.

Our school education system needs quality enhancement and above all professionalising the teaching career in order to attract good quality and qualified teachers into it.

Well, my above observations may not be very relevant for urban educated population who try to spend any amounts for their only child. But take the case of middle class or semi urban families, it will be true!

When a man gets angry he becomes either a Hero or a Villain.

When a woman gets angry she can be only an arrogant villainous woman and never a heroine!

Not just that she will be depicted as a woman with all vices or bad character!

Why is that, dear society?

Sometimes in life, we have to quit something which may keep us comfortable ..to get on to something uncomfortable.. But that's when you quit to win...
