Yesterday during my interaction with girl students - all final year degree students, I started the session with my own story. 15 years back I was also an ordinary B.Sc student in a rural college with least idea about what i want to do in my life or what my career should be! No one told me about what is "career" for a girl and all that I knew was Govt job or teaching are better jobs for a girl. My mother inspired me to think big and to have a career myself instead of depending on my husband or family . Also, thanks to my NCC training and leadership skills, I started dreaming beyond teaching or Govt job and wanted to become an IAS Officer (which was not fulfilled due to changes in my aspirations and marital status! ) . 15 years down the lane, despite such advanced technology, FB and Whatsapp, the girls still think "teaching " and "Govt job" are best for girls with arts and science degree . Despite 1000s of career options available ,our girls are not sure about what they can do after a BSc Chemistry or a BA Economics. I tried to motivate them with my own life story where my real career started after my BSc Chemistry and within 15years could achieve several things which probably i never imagined myself when i was a 20 yr old degree student.
While I was narrating the story , one girl in the front gave a confused look , which meant " you mean you did your BSc 15years back ? unbelievable" . I said, "Yes, though I look young, I am actually 35yrs" to which the entire group gave a big gasp. Then, my next question . "So, how many of you want to be smart and young even at the age at 50 or 70?" All of them raised hands.
The secret to be young and smart is simple : Do what you love and keep yourself busy. Be energetic and enthusiastic. Have a goal and work hard towards it. Be cheerful always. you will not put on weight or appear old.So, even at age of 35 and a mother of 2 , you will also look like me! ;)
Not sure if they were motivated with my career speech, but guess i motivated them with my appearance! :P :)
Jokes apart, I think its high time we provide proper career orientation to our girls and make them aspire beyond the ordinary in order to help them become a productive citizen of the nation. Most of our girls leave their career decisions to their parents or husband. They even forget their capabilities and focus only on family and raising kids. I am not saying that being a homemaker is a crime. But, I think wasting one's talents or potential only for taking care of one's own family is a crime.
